You're Website has been banned by Google or a Search Engine: Now what do you do?

My Website Has Been Banned, PageRank (PR 0) or the dreaded Gray toolbar by Google: 

This is the worst fear of any Webmaster.  The first thing that you need to do is figure out why your website got banned, if indeed it is, banned in the first place. Then see if there is something you can do to get your website and it's Page Rank (PR) restored by Google.

If you think your site might have been temporarily unavailable when Googlebot paid a visit, go back and check your server logs and see if you can find a visit from the Googlebot a few days after the Google Dance. If Google came and visited most or all of your pages, it is more likely you've been banned for illegal optimization tactics. But if you cannot find Googlebot, and you have gaps in your sever logs from the last time the Googlebot visited your website then it likely was trying to access your site and it is likely it just couldn't find you at that time.  If this is the case, don't panic.  Don't do anything drastic to your website. Just wait for the next Google dance. If it was temporarily unavailable, Googlebot will visit during the next crawl, and discover that you are still actually there, and index your site as usual and give you back your PageRank.

If you have determined that Google banned you for illegal SEO (search engine optimization) techniques, you have a lot more work to do. So much, in fact, that many webmasters just remove the domain that was penalized and start with something domain.
