We all know that the very first step to making a sale is to let your customers know that you exist! Unfortunately, there's not much "drive by" business for Internet companies. As nice as it would be, customers won't just stumble into your lap. So, what does this mean for net entrepreneurs?

You need to advertise and advertise BIG!! We know that quality website traffic is hard to come by. This is exactly why you are here. You have built your website and waited for people to see your website, but your main problem is getting customers in the door.

About 3 years about we were looking for ways to help us promote our Internet Businesses in a affordable manner.  We tried the Free for All (FFA) ads which only resulted in our email box being filled with offers from other businesses who were trying to market their products.  FFA advertising is what we consider non-effective advertising.  Everyone who has thought about promoting their web based business has used this form of advertising.  FFA's will NOT deliver targeted traffic.  Your primary focus should be "How to obtain quality traffic!"  The bottom line is "If it is free..don't expect results because you get what you pay for."  

One of the areas that most people turned to is Pay Per Click Advertising (PPC).   You simply cannot go wrong with Pay Per Click Advertising.  However, finding the right company to market your product or service can be challenging.  This form of advertising is considered to be extremely specialized in terms of advertising and receiving quality traffic.  PPC's traffic is delivered to your website based on targeted keywords or keyword phrases that you select and are searched on by potential customers from a search engine.   We initially used one of the Big Named Companies like Overture.  However, like most entrepreneurs we were and not afraid to still admit that we operate on an advertising budget.  Overture was simply put too costly.  We later discovered that we were bidding/competing with large corporations for top keywords.  Depending on your industry popular keywords could cost as high as $3-$7 per click.  Most new start-up company's cannot afford to spend $3 for each referral.  Most of the companies who are spending this type of money per click are big name Corporations.  On the major Pay Per Click Search Engines they buy up the top referring keywords and they are willing to spend top dollars for traffic.  If you decided to use a large PPC Search Engine to bring traffic to your website you must make sure that you monitor your PPC account.  If you don't you could very will be spending hundreds of dollars in a very short time while trying to compete with your competition.  It is not uncommon for you to get involved in a bidding war when trying to obtain the #1 position for a popular keyword or keywords.

This is why you need to find other PPC search engines who are able to send you quality traffic at affordable prices.  Check and see if they are listed on the major search engines like Google, Yahoo, MSN, Altavista, HotBot, AOL and other quality sites.  Look at their Alexa Rankings.  See if they offer services that are geared to helping the average Webmaster who may be operating a home business succeed.  What is their customer service like?
