The Art of Link Popularity 101 Part 3- How to effectively increase your ranking with search engines

We have received tons of request and questions from Net-entrepreneurs that relate to Search Engine Ranking Position or commonly known to webmasters as SERP's.  So we decided to take some of the most popular questions in this issue and answer them for those who visit our website, subscribe to "The Traffic Scout" and want to learn how to increase search engine ranking and generate quality traffic, because we always say "The road to our success is paved with Quality Traffic!" and trust me I know you all are "scouting" for it.

Here is a question from one of our subscribers:

Q:  How important are the quality of links that point to and from my website? Does this play a role in how I am ranked by search engines?

A:  The Art of Linking Popularity 101.  This question is so vast that we are going to break it down into a 2 or 3 part series.  However, the short answer is:  You can have thousands of pages linking to your website but if they do not contain or say the right things about your site or if the links are not related at all to the theme or subject of your site then those links may not help. In fact, they could very well be damaging to your Search Engine Ranking Position (SERP) on the major search engines.

In Part 2 we talked about analyzing your competition.  Before you add a Link to your website and more importantly before you request a link to your website you should first see how popular that site is.  You want to make sure that the site you are linking to or from is NOT banned by other search engines, and if they (the site) is NOT listed you don't want to waste valuable time linking to or requesting a link from them.  Now it time to discuss-How to write an effective Link Exchange Request!

A good Link Exchange request which will gets results may have several key parts involved. Before asking for a link exchange make sure you have visited the website to see if the webmaster has special instructions for you to follow in order to facilitate the link exchange.

1.   If you don't follow the Webmaster's instructions you will lessen your chances of getting a link from that site.  What you want to do is make this process as easy and as simple as possible for the other webmasters.

2.   Don't try to trick the person you are sending the link exchange request to.  Having a tricky subject line is not professional and trying to trick someone to read your email will NOT get you a favorable response.  (How many spam emails have you read and deleted in the blink of an eye?).  If you do this the person reading your email will most likely delete your request after reading the initial text.

Here is an example of a link request email.  Please don't copy it verbatim.  It is only a guideline. Take some time to edit it.

Subject: Link Request

(this should do it.  If they're interested, you'll get a response. If not, your email will be deleted without any response from them.)

1.  Cardinal rule:  If you really want to get a solid link exchange it be in your best interest to add their link to your website BEFORE  you request a link.  In your email let them know where they can find their link on your website.

2.  Check to see if you can find the point of contact's name.  Your email will receive more attention if you start it off with Hello Michael, " instead of just "Hello" or "Dear Webmaster" or some other generic greeting.

3.  Take a look at the site you are making a link request to.  Find out what things you have in common with them and make a special note of this in your email.  Tell them what you positively think about their site, what your visitors would enjoy from it, and then explain what your website will offer the other webmaster's visitors and how they will benefit from the link exchange. This shows that you actually took the time to visit their site and are contacting them with a genuine request.

4.  Always include your name and the URL of the website you're requesting to exchange links with in the body of your email.

Example:  ...I've recently visited your website, KlickonUSA.com at http://www.klickonusa.com and

The reason you should add their URL is because many webmasters own several sites so adding the URL of the site you are requesting a link exchange from is takes the guess work out on which site you are interested in.  We operate several sites and knowing which sites webmasters are requesting links to takes the guess work out.

5.  You want to make sure that you are polite and sincere about your request.  Don't go overboard with flattery.  Be genuine about your request and clearly state to the webmaster why you believe that exchanging links with be beneficial for both sites.

6.  Make sure you provide them with a BRIEF description of your site, and the URL you'd like them to link to. Note:  If you are exchanging text links you want to ensure that the description you are using contains the major keywords you want to get indexed or search on with the major search engines.  You might want to design a webpage with a URL that already has your link exchange information. This should include graphics or banners as well.

The point that we are trying to make is that you want to be respectful and professional with link exchanges.  You want to show them that you are a key player in the industry.  The best advice would be to write the type of letter that you would enjoy receiving.  Do this and you are going to receive many positive responses.

We are going to  finish up our series on "How to obtain HIGH ranking on search engines". We'll see you then.
